In the days before local councils had PR departments , performance targets and outsourcing they got on with their duties in a quite fashion. Seen and not heard was never more the case when it came to refuse collection as far as Birmingham City Council was concerned because they employed electric vehicles for collection of the contents of the citys domestic rubbish. How civilised it was then, no wheelie bins permanently on parade, no excessively noisy machinery or high revving engines instead a dustbinman, before they were called refuse operatives, would actually collect your bin, tip its contents into the wooden body and actually RETURN it to your garden. The lorry would then in almost complete silence make its way to the next point, in fact the only sound was the non stop good humoured banter of the crew, the unsung, unloved heros of our society who now have to shout at each other to make themselves heard above the noise of their vehicle.
