Description
My first attempt at serious aviation art.
In the beautiful summer of 1940 after the fall of France Britain faced the might of Hitler's Third Reich alone and many pundits believed that these islands would be the next victim of the apparently unstoppable military war machine. However it was not to be and what became known as the Battle of Britain proved to be Germany's first defeat and could be regarded as the most critical conflict of the entire War for without Britain there could be no D-Day and most likely the defeat of Russia too. The victory was brought about by the superior tactics of Fighter Command and the courage of a close knit comradeship of young fighter pilots, mainly British but also from the Commonwealth, Poland and even some American volunteers who became known as the Few. It is to these young men, many of whom made the supreme sacrifice, that we own our freedom and let's hope we should ever forget that fact.
In this view just south of Dover two fighters head out to sea on a patrol while below can be seen one of the "chain home" radar stations which helped immeasurably in Fighter Command's victory in the battle.

A great painting and a great reminder of how much we own those courageous pilots - to have prevented Hitler from turning our world into a dark age !
