Artist's Description

An early acrylic of a GWR broad gauge locomotive waiting at Temple Meads, Bristol with a Paddington express. The old GWR broad gauge was unique to the Great Western railway and measured seven feet between the rails and allowed the GWR to run trains in great safety and stability at unheard of speeds in the early days but after nearly sixty years of operation and under pressure from the government's Gauge Commission was finally abolished in 1892 and replaced by standard gauge.
