An image from the pages of Locomotives Illustrated of about 1970 depicting the footplate of a Great Western Castle class 4-6-0 loco. The footplate had little creature comforts for the crew but was familiar to all footplatemen with its myriad gauges and operating levers all of which had their use.Of note is the spare firing shovel, necessary as it was not unknown to lose one's shovel in the firebox, and the vital tea-can on the ledge above the fire-door. Sadly the original of this painting is now lost, most probably in the archives of Ian Allen, but I might repaint it in oils if I get the time.
