Description
In the murky atmosphere of Saltley No 3 shed 9F 92026 simmers quietly while being prepared by a driver on Preparation and Disposal duty. P and D was an occasional duty performed by a crew (Driver and Fireman) who either prepared or disposed six engines in a shift of nominally eight hours. On a busy shed such as Saltley where the turnover of engines was great many crews were needed on any given day and a crew would often split the work and complete their quota in about four hours and then go home! Happy days but extremely hard and dirty work. No 9s were more easily disposed because of their rocking grates but it was a lottery determined by the order in which the engines arrived on shed and on which crew member was available to dispose an engine.
The Crosti 9Fs were unpopular with crews and the operating advantages of savings on coal consumption not proven so that eventually all ten engines had the Crosti boiler removed or blanked off and operated as normal 9Fs for the remainder of their short lives.
