Nobody quite knows how many Bedford QLs were made during WW2 but they typified what an Army lorry should look like to most people and many soldiered on right up until the early sixties. I should know for I had the dubious pleasure of driving one for a large slice of my National Service days, but it broke my heart when I had to swap it for a later Bedford RL.
Here a troop carrying version waits at a remote railway station for the latest intake from basic training to arrive while the WO2 chats with the driver. When the new intake arrives the fag will be stubbed out, the sergeant-major will revert to type and Army discipline will be restored. The lorry is much like the type I had charge of for a year or so and the lance-jack bears an uncanny resemblance to yours truly in his youth but the rest is pure fiction.
