An old railway carriage serves as the basis for a transport cafe as the crew of the 1959 Commer artic check the chains on the low- loader trailer before heading for a fry-up and a cuppa in this scene from the 1960s.
Edward Beck was based in Greg Street, Reddish, near Stockport and had three Commer TS3s at one time, the TS stood for two-stroke and the 3 for three cylinders. Three cylinders seems small for a lorry engine but there were six horizionally-opposed pistons with a Rootes supercharger which boosted the diesel two-stroke unit and gave it a distinctive exhaust note like no other. The two oversized silencers did little to muffle the noise and you could hear a stroker coming a mile off.
The transport cafe is typical of thousands of similar establishments before motorways and regulation which provided cheap bed, board and refreshments to the legions of lorry drivers who tramped the roads of Britain.
The original of this painting was in oils on a 20″30″ board.
A painting like this of your favourite vehicle, British or American, in oils on canvas or board would cost about 1500.

I remember this and many others from my childhood. Some of which I would have seen daily whilst they were being completed. My father was a great artist. I wish I had access to more of the originals as he had wished for 99.9% of his life. Myself and my bother had planned to collate his work, and show it off. Now the originals are just being sold off for wine tokens. It’s a great shame. At least it is all in one place on this website, so we can claw back the catalogue of his legacy in prints, and allow his grandchildren to view his talent.
