This smart Leyland Beaver dray of the well known Birmingham brewers Mitchells and Butlers did the rounds of the brewerys pubs for many years and was, if memory serves me right, always well turned out.
In the background is another much missed icon of Birmingham life, a Midland Red bus, a product of BMMO who were a forward-looking company with a style all their own until they were swallowed up by the bland WMPTE in the 1970s.
The pub is the Golden Hind on the Birchfield Road in the suburb of Perry Barr and was a favourite of mine in the early sixties.
Painted in acrylics on a 24″18″ canvas board a painting like this in oils would cost about 2500.

COMMISSION A PAINTING FROM MIKE. It is with great regret that I have to inform you that Mike sadly passed away November 2020 aged 81, but I, (his partner) will keep his shop here going and am happy to reply to any emails you might send to his own email address at mike@transportartist.co.uk. Virtually nobody considered the humble lorry worthy of the subject of a painting until Mike made it so. Years of being at the sharp end of long distance HGV driving has given him an insight and knowledge into the industry that enables Mike to depict lorries as they really were in the past and not the idealized view of the less knowledgeable making him the man to paint an original of your favourite commercial vehicle. He is without a doubt THE lorry...

Dwayne thank you so much for your kind comment, this is a scene from my past having mis-spent many happy, careless hours in this very pub in my youth!

Mike once again you have nailed it with this painting. Your attention to detail is absolutly amazing to me. Everything fom your lettering to your attention to the details in the windows to the movement your painting depicts and everything in between. Just awesome as most all of your work is. Great job, Dwayne
